Blood Sabbath
By Tanica Oliver
Blood Sabbath
Directed by Brianne Murphy 1972

A very rare site in the 70s was seeing a female director. Even more rare to see a female horror director. This film was in the same vein of the British film The Wicker Man.

The film centers around David (Tony Geary) a Vietnam vet recently returned from overseas traveling in Mexico. He falls in love with a water Nymph Yyalah (Susan Damante), who tells him that she can not be with him because he has a soul. Now the poor fellow has to figure out how to rid himself of his pesky soul in order to be with his lady love. What's a man to do, you ask, why go see the local witch Queen Ilsa (Dyanne Thorne) who has her own plan for David. Sadly the film goes pretty dull from this point. About 15 minutes of seeing the two new love birds David and Yyalah frolicing around, oblivious to Ilsa's deal with the villagers. They bring her a young girl and she guarantees them a plentiful harvest. The village priest, who can no longer stand it, decides to confront the witch Queen. Only to be surrounded by the young witches of her coven, all nude. This is another point to add about this film, nudity runs rampant, but it's not all about sex. After a while it is realized that the women in this film are in complete control and are comfortable with their sexuality.

Our two lovebirds are sadly the blandest part of the film, they seem to help make the film drag on with their delivery of the dialogue. The witch Queen is fun to watch. It is quite and original film and even though there are some elements that could have been better it still is worth a watch. Think of it as a Saturday afternoon movie.
